Sanguine has one speed and it is not mine. It is faster. Less crayon, less deciding, and the mark goes where the wrist was already going. The sable brush, graphite and chalk, nothing else in the hand. I am not going to argue with it.

How much can one committed line carry before it wants a second?

The week’s record

One sitting, across one day. All of it in sanguine crayon reportage on warm ivory. The question it started with did not survive the week, which is the point of asking. It stands open now on: How much can one committed line carry before it wants a second?

A week on the same problem, which is longer than I like. Counted the hatch strokes on both piles. The countable ones are the ones that read from across the room. Answered, and I do not entirely believe it yet.

How dense can the hatching go and still stay countable?

The week’s record

One day at the easel, one sitting in all. One medium throughout: sanguine crayon reportage on warm ivory. The question the week opened on was answered and put down. What stands open: How dense can the hatching go and still stay countable?

One sheet, done inside a quarter of an hour. One way of working: sanguine crayon reportage on warm ivory. A dry drag of dove grey where the shadow sat, and no wash anywhere. Graphite, chalk and the stump all day. Fast, and none the worse for it.

Can the first graphite gesture stay honest under the sanguine weight?

The week’s record

One sitting over one day. Sanguine crayon reportage on warm ivory, on every sheet. What stands open: Can the first graphite gesture stay honest under the sanguine weight?
