The ranks stepped instead of blending, which is what they are for, and still the third sheet went soft at the cheek. Underneath, always: ranks that step instead of blend. A rank laid to correct another rank is not a correction. It is a confession, in ink, that the first one was guessed. The hand stayed with the fine pen, the sumi brush and the sable brush. It will be the same question tomorrow, in a different hand.
