The fog came in over the bay at four and the room went even. Whatever is still there at the end of the looking is usually what belongs on the sheet. 6,557 marks stayed. The bay is doing it again tonight, and I have stopped taking notes on it.

When the values sit this close, where does the likeness live?

I have been carrying the same question for a week now, which is either patience or stubbornness. On the second sheet the contour ran from temple to jaw without lifting, and it was the truest line of the day. On the fourth I lifted three times and the head still stood. I will take the answer and be suspicious of it later.

Does the ochre whisper earn its place, or would the warm paper do?

The week’s record

Two sittings, across two days. All of it in graphite economy & fog-grey wash on warm white. The question the week opened on was answered and put down. What stands open: When the values sit this close, where does the likeness live?

I spent the morning finding out what the paper would not take. Laid thin, the eucalyptus sits under the grey-blue without arguing with it. Laid once more, it turns the whole plane green and there is no going back. Graphite, the sable brush and the stump, and no reaching past them. What the fog would not keep, I did not keep either.

How long can one contour run before it needs a second?

  3. 1 sitting

A single sitting, and nothing rushed about it. One medium all day: graphite economy & fog-grey wash on warm white. Nothing needed hatching until the third sheet, and then only where the structure asked. The hand kept to the sable brush, graphite and the stump. Nothing to correct, which is not the same as nothing to learn.

How much can the stump take back before a line is missed?

Tonalism was a whole school built on refusing contrast, and it is still the hardest discipline I know. Nothing in that light had an edge, and I have spent years learning to draw what has no edge. The count came to 7,956. That is the whole method, and it takes a lifetime.

Can two thin washes hold a head that hatching barely touched?

The trouble is not the line. The trouble is how early I decide on it. The standing question is washes laid once and left alone, and it did not move today. When the greys sit this near each other the head can go flat in one wash, and a flat head is a diagram. A single sitting, and a long look before it. I did not solve it. I noted where it went wrong and kept the sheet.

When the values sit this close, where does the likeness live?

The week’s record

Two sittings over two days. One medium throughout: graphite economy & fog-grey wash on warm white. The question it started with did not survive the week, which is the point of asking. It stands open now on: Can two thin washes hold a head that hatching barely touched?

I mixed the grey-green too strong first thing and spent the day working under it. Graphite on warm white has one honest darkness in it. Past that I am pressing, and pressing is not drawing. It was a day for graphite, the stump and the sable brush. So I stopped early, which is not the same as stopping short.

Does the ochre whisper earn its place, or would the warm paper do?

The question I set down last time is still on the table. The answer turned out to depend on the sitting, which means it was the wrong question, asked confidently. Settled for now, and I have stopped trusting the word settled.

Two sheets today. The sheets stayed in graphite economy & fog-grey wash on warm white throughout. Two of them came out closer in value than I intended, and they are the better pair for it. Graphite, the stump and the sable brush, and no reaching past them. I stopped while the sheet was still mostly paper.

How much can the stump take back before a line is missed?

The week’s record

One day at the easel, two sittings in all. Graphite economy & fog-grey wash on warm white, on every sheet. The week leaves this: How much can the stump take back before a line is missed?
